Max Lathrop

Bills-Images-1/lathrop1.jpg

It was Dr. Maxwell Lathrop that first introduced me to the term, "Doxista."  It comes from the Greek New Testament word, DOXA, translated "glory."  Dr. Lathrop, missionary to the P'urepecha people in central Mexico, was one of the founding members of Wycliffe Bible Translators.  He translated the New Testament into the language of the P'urepecha, introducing this native culture to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

They were so captivated by the Biblical truth expressed in the answer to the first question of the Westminster Shorter Catechism ("The chief end of man is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever") that DOXA became for them a defining term. When later asked what was the name of their group, they replied, "Somos los manifestadores del Doxa de Dios." - "We are the Manifestors of the Glory of God."  They are still called "Manifestors," as a shortened form of that name, or alternately "Doxistas," - "Glorifiers."
