Why the word, "Doxista?"

When Dr. Maxwell Lathrop translated the Scriptures into the language of the P'urepecha, he chose to retain the Greek word DOXA referring to God's "glory," rather than using the Latin "Gloria."

It was Max who introduced me to the term Doxista - a Spanish-modified form of the Greek DOXA, indicating a "glorifier."  That is, one whose central purpose in life is to manifest the glory of God.

When the P'urepecha believers were required to give themselves a name, identifying their "denomination," their response was that they were "Los Manifestadores de DOXA de Dios," - "The manifestors of the DOXA of God."  Or, as Max sometimes shortened the identifier: "Doxistas."
